IBM Serves Wimbledon Tennis With Data Analytics

IBM Serves Wimbledon Tennis With Data Analytics | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

It’s Wimbledon season and that means tennis, strawberries and Pimm’s. It also means big data analytics. Previous Forbes writers have chided tennis for being behind other sports in data analytics, but this suggestion may need some clarification.

Luca Naso's insight:

At the Wimbledon tennis tournament, IBM will use a solution based on InfoSphere + Watson. This will make it possible not only to collect information just about everything that happens to the players and to the balls, but also to relate this large set of data with historical information and to query it using Natural Language.

There's more.

With so much data about each shot and player, it will be possible to analyse players' playing style. This will in turn allow the players to study their opponents' weakness and strengths to better prepare next matches.

A very interesting note.

IBM is training tennis professionals to use the data entry system, rather than training data scientists on tennis.

Yet another proof of the importance of having field experts (about the specific industry under consideration).

Formula One Racing Learns From Sensors

Formula One Racing Learns From Sensors | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Big data, meet fast data. Lotus Formula One team uses more than 200 sensors on the car to measure tires, brakes and more for real-time alarms and post-race analysis.
Luca Naso's insight:

F1 racing can benefit largely from Big Data.

Although a Lotus car has over 200 sensors collecting data, it is more about FAST data than BIG data: teams on the track need to make decisions in 30'.

I believe that a crucial point would be learning the drive style of the two pilots, and then use this knowledge on race day to predict what and when could go wrong.

The Next Big Thing In Sports Data: Predicting (And Avoiding) Injuries

The Next Big Thing In Sports Data: Predicting (And Avoiding) Injuries | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Can data tell a player's future? Teams like the San Antonio Spurs and New England Patriots are betting on it.
Luca Naso's insight:

In sports, injuries don’t just cost wins. They cost money. By one estimate, teams across Major League Baseball spent $665 million last year on the salaries of banged-up guys and their replacements.

Now, the fast-growing industry of performance analytics says it can minimize those massive losses. The trick: using data to anticipate how an athlete will get hurt before it actually happens.

Performance analytics have the potential to extend a player’s career, but it can also reveal hidden physical problems and shorten careers. If a player is shown to be at a heavy risk for injury, what owner is going to pay that person big bucks?

Automated Insights Using Big Data to Change How Fans Consume Sports

Automated Insights Using Big Data to Change How Fans Consume Sports | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Sports produce data. Big Data.

Big Data is one of the latest trends to shake up the sports world.

Luca Naso's insight:

How can Big Data affect sports? More than what one might think. here are two examples.

1.

Professional sports has started to implement Big Data analysis into player evaluation processes.

The MLB, for example, is using a new technology, called FIELDf/x, that tracks and digitally records the position of all players and hit balls in real-time, thus allowing teams to sift through data and better analyze the defensive efficiency of specific players.

2.

Can you imagine a system that automatically follows your favourite sport events? That gives you real time reports, that posts on the social media that you actually care about, that personalises the text only on the event that you follow, that sifts through more than 100 years of stats?

Stop imaging, Automated Insights is doing just that, and more: the content sounds like a human wrote it.
